Farmers living along the 3,670 sq km command area of the Indira Gandhi Canal have managed to reverse desertification in large chunks of land in Jaisalmer, the farthest district from the canal's source. They have dug small ponds, locally known as diggies to store the canal water during summer.
Jaisalmer fort, the second oldest fort of Rajasthan, is built on a hillock 75 m above the ground. Inside the fort there were three sweet water wells which no longer exist. Water from Dabla village, 12 km from Jaisalmer, is taken to the fort from where it is supplied to the whole town.
Gadisar tank, built by Gharsi Rawal in 1367ad, was the chief source of water supply to Jaisalmer town until 1965. Its water lasted throughout the year. Today, with its catchment area destroyed, the lake has almost dried up.
